I’m not sure if it was while running for President or as President that Jimmy Carter decided to give an interview to Playboy Magazine. But I remember that one of the things people got all worked up about (besides the fact that he gave an interview to Playboy) was his admission or confession that he at times struggles with lust. I guess most men in public office do not make such admissions (until perhaps they get caught acting out on it with someone other than their spouse). But I want to ponder today the relationship with lust and gay or same sex marriage. Continue reading Jimmy Carter, Jesus, Lust and Gay Marriage

INTRODUCTION – Two weeks ago Rob talked to you about Jesus’s commissioning of His twelve disciples in Matthew 10:1-15. It’s a pretty cool passage of scripture as we see the authority and power He gave them to preach the good news of the kingdom, heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons etc. Just as He sent them out then, He is sending us out today.

But it is crucial that we understand the world He is sending us into. That’s what the rest of the chapter deals with – and I would like to read that now. Matthew 10:16-42

Woah! I’m not sure this is what I signed up for – – Basically Jesus just told His disciples that they will endure and experience persecution and even death from either the state, the corrupt religious leaders, their own families or possibly all of the above. INTRODUCTION – Some foundational convictions as we wade through the gospel of Matthew:
1. Our primary goal is to know Jesus Christ in all of His glory and majesty. Jesus said to the Jews once, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me.” (Jn. 5:39) Now He was talking about the old testament scriptures. How much more do the gospels testify of Him. All scripture points to Him. There is no life or spirituality apart from Him.

2. Our second most important goal is to be made like Him in every way. Jesus said to His disciples early on, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matt. 4:19) As we follow Jesus Christ moment by moment and day by day – He gradually but persistently transforms us into His very image and likeness. We become winsome like He was and is. There is no better place to see who Jesus is and what He is like and what it means to follow Him than in the gospels. INTRODUCTION – last sermon in Matthew 9 – – we looked at this fallen human tendency of criticizing and slandering and getting offended with Jesus and His followers – rather than seeing how screwed up we ourselves are, and how much we personally need Jesus, and those who truly are following Him to help us get cleaned up and transformed from the inside out.

In the early part of Matthew 9 – we see the scribes murmuring among themselves about Jesus’s audacity to tell someone their sins are forgiven. In vs. 11 we see the Pharisees complaining to Jesus’s disciples about the kind of people Jesus chose to wine and dine with.
In vs. 14 we see John’s disciples complaining to Jesus Himself about why they fast and His disciples do not. At least these disciples came to the source with their complaint, though their complaint was unfortunate because it revealed where their source of security and worth was, and it revealed how quick they were to turn on others when something in those others’ lives challenged something in theirs.
What I want to do in the rest of our time together this morning is explore Jesus’s three fold answer to their question of complaint. Matthew 9:14-17 Continue reading Jesus & Newness Matthew 9:14-17

INTRODUCTION – I believe it was about 12 and a half years ago when Anne and I got a phone call from our real estate agent telling us that he believed he had found the house for us. We had lived in a very nice two story rental home on the last block of 13th street near the Elfin forest for our first five years here in Los Osos. Our kids had made good friends on the block; we had at least two block parties a year with our neighbors, and hardly anything needed fixed on this house.

Because the house on 15th street was in the process of being foreclosed, we couldn’t walk through it; but Anne and I took several walks by it – scoping it out and praying about the possibilities. When we finally got a chance to walk through it, my wife immediately knew this was the one for us. This was the answer to years of prayers amidst some tears – as by that time we had been married 18 years and never owned a home – due to our having to get me through graduate school, and then being missionaries in Hong Kong for four years. The only problem was: this house was a disaster inside and out. When Caroline first saw it she cried in disbelief that we would dare consider leaving a house – that compared to this one was in immaculate condition. I mean this house was basically a garbage dump – inside and out. Today though – it is a testament to the transformation that vision can bring about in a much abused and dilapidated home. Well we are racing through the book of Matthew at lightning speed, …. O.K. I guess its not good to start out a sermon with an out and out lie. We are going through the book of Matthew at a snail’s pace – hoping to finish it before the New Heavens and the New Earth replace this groaning place called the earth.

But we are making progress, and we are beginning to note some trends. And one of them is that the average person in Jesus’s day was powerfully drawn to Him and very responsive to His ministry. But the governmental leaders and especially the religious leaders of His day – – by and large were increasingly offended by Him, and were thus more and more hostile towards Him.

In some respects this seems to be the case as well today. But my concern today is not those who are unresponsive to Jesus. My concern is those that are. And more importantly – my concern is whether we are the kind of people that Jesus Christ can use – to bring the responsive ones into a relationship with Himself. INTRODUCTION – – Well we are on day 19 of the 40 day “Seek God for the City” devotional. I hope this little tool has been helpful to strengthen and expand your vision of our Lord and Savior – – and especially His heart for our community.

Why the risen Christ – the creator of the Universe – who has over six billion people to deal with – – would give any special attention to people in our Coastal Region – is beyond me. But the fact is – – He loves and cares as much about the people in Los Osos, Morro Bay and Cayucos as He does about anybody else – anywhere else in the world. And He is ready today to demonstrate that through His favorite instrument – the church. We are not only His favorite instrument – – we are His only instrument – except for His angels – who often are given orders from God in response to our prayers. And if you read Acts 12 this morning – as part of your daily reading the Bible through in a year – New Testament reading – – you saw that truth demonstrated when the church fervently prayed for Peter as he was in prison, and then God sent an angel to get him out. INTRODUCTION – refer back to early January sermon where I went through the first five months of the year, and asked prayer for matthew series and mentioned my early look at matt 8:28-34 & then encounter with young man

This morning we are going to look at one of the more unusual stories in the New Testament – – trusting that the Holy Spirit will help us not get distracted with some of the controversies or peculiarities; but instead that He will give us His heart for the demonically oppressed people around us.

It is my contention this morning that in every city and in every age there have been and there will be people who have been severely tormented and oppressed by demons. Turn with me if you would to Matthew 8:28 as we seek to learn from an incident Jesus had with two such people. Continue reading Breakthrough, Advance and Demonized People – Matt. 8:28-34

INTRODUCTION – Our church exists to help each of you, and any and every other person we can influence in any way to make their highest priority and passion in life – – to know and follow the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the risen, exalted Savior of the World. He is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. He is the one that even people who do not know Him are singing about in these days leading up to Christmas – – because deep down everyone knows that only He can “free His own from Satan’s tyranny; and save them from the depths of hell and give them victory o’er the grave” as O Come O Come Emmanuel so passionately states.

This Savior has an agenda; a set of purposes and plans. He is on the move. There are things in His heart and mind for every person, family, neighborhood and city on the earth today. And we have the privilege and responsibility to follow Him, and be His instruments to see His plans and purposes fulfilled on the earth.

Many of you have been aggressively following Him for some time now. Some of you may be fairly new to this pursuit. Some of you might be still entertaining the idea. One thing all of you need to know is that one of His great purposes and passions for you – is that you might be a person of great faith in Him. And that your faith might free you to live above your circumstances, and thus be His instrument in this sin wracked world – where so many people have become depressed and even hopeless because of their circumstances. INTRODUCTION – One of the biggest debates in the church world over the last 15 years or so revolves around the emergence of the “seeker friendly” philosophy of doing church. This philosophy proposes that we should create an atmosphere in the way we run our worship services so that seekers can come and be comfortable and gradually warm up to the demands of Jesus. There is some truth and strengths to this movement. It is not my purpose this morning to diss them. But I do want to bring your attention to a consistent pattern in the way Jesus Himself dealt with – – and I dare say – – continues to deal with would be followers.

My sense after years of studying Jesus’s way with men is – If you were Jesus’s pr man, and you held to the seeker friendly philosophy, you would have died a thousands deaths as you observed Him respond to people’s responses.

Looking at Matthew chapter 8 – Jesus has just healed a leper, a centurion’s slave from afar, Peter’s mother in law, and a host of others – many who were demon possessed vs. 16 tells us.
Momentum is happening again. Even the Scribes – the religious leaders of that day – are taking notice. And one of them comes up to Jesus (in vs. 19) , takes Him aside, puts his arm around Jesus’s shoulders, and says, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” Continue reading Discipleship & Obedience Matthew 8:18-22

INTRODUCTION – The healthcare debate is dominating the news these days – especially the public option. I want to talk to you this morning about another option that is rarely if ever discussed on the news. And that is the kingdom of God option.

“Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand.” Matt. 3:2 – John the Baptist

“Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand.” Matt. 4:17 – Jesus Christ

“Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.” Matt. 4:23 Continue reading Healthcare According to Jesus – Matthew 8:1-17

INTRODUCTION – We come today to the end of the three chapter section – typically referred to as the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5-7), in our ongoing series through the gospel of Matthew. In this long – saturated in reality sermon – Jesus Christ is giving an invitation to you and I to be a part of a people – – who are to be an ever visible expression of the glorious kingdom of heaven – on earth. This is to be our prayer; and as it becomes our prayer – it will also become our passion; and as it becomes our passion it will become our practice.

As we learn to walk in true righteousness – as opposed to pharisaic righteousness – or the kind of religious façade that seeks to please and impress men – rather than God – – we increasingly as a people – have the opportunity to be a living demonstration of what the kingdom of God looks like to our fellow citizens and neighbors – – citizens and neighbors, who are trapped in the kingdom of darkness, and who are encouraged to stay there by false prophets and false teachers, who demonstrate the saying or truth that “misery loves company.” Continue reading Hearing and Heeding Jesus’s Words Matthew 7:24-29

INTRODUCTION – Jesus has just talked about prayer & its role in advancing the kingdom – – and the heart of the Father to give so much more to His children than we give Him credit for.

Certainly this is one of the most encouraging passages of scripture in the New Testament.

But the sad reality is – for many who who have read this passage at some time in their life – they will not ever really experience it – – that is – – this practice of continually asking and then receiving, or continually seeking and then finding; or continually knocking and seeing amazing doors opened – – that lifestyle of seeing God intervene and move in their spheres of influence – – will evade many who have been exposed to its possibility. One of the reasons for that lies in the fact that to experience the presence, promises and resources of Christ – – you and I have to accept the precepts, pre-conditions and realities of Christ. INTRODUCTION – I don’t know if any of you, who have known the Lord for a while can identify with this; but when I reflect about my first feeble attempts at ministering to others in the name of the Lord – – well it’s a little embarrassing. Certainly nothing to write home about. King of ugly actually….

In great contrast to my beginnings, when Jesus Christ started His ministry, huge crowds were drawn, every person He ministered to who needed healing or deliverance from demons received it, and according to Matthew 4:23-25, His ministry was an immediate and complete success. Had He wanted to, He could have just continued healing the sick and casting out demons and proclaiming the kingdom of God; and we would have all marveled at how great a minister, teacher, healer and deliverer He was.

But Jesus didn’t come to make a name for Himself. He left that to the Father. He wasn’t secretly hoping that He would some day be called “The Preacher of the Year” by Christianity Today; or that He would have been thought of as the greatest Healer that ever hit the planet. INTRODUCTION – The Bible says that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of lords. He reigns supreme over all; and the kingdom that He rules is supreme over all other earthly kingdoms including the kingdom of darkness, which Satan rules. Before Jesus Christ returns – He is going to establish His kingdom on the earth in such a way that everyone will know He is God, and will have opportunity to enter into His kingdom and His ever expanding family. His primary instrument to accomplish that is the sons and daughters of His kingdom, who comprise the only organization on the face of the earth, which is guaranteed to never fold or crumble – – His church.

The primary means by which His sons and daughters – His church is to accomplish this purpose is by learning to pray like Jesus did. Through prayer we are daily given the privilege of seeing what isn’t – come into being. Through prayer we can bring heaven’s reality down to earth in our present circumstances. Through prayer we can see the fingers of Satan and his demons broken off those God brings into our garden or sphere of influence. Continue reading Overcoming Worry Matthew 6:25-34

INTRODUCTION – Wrap up/Review of Lord’s Prayer

The Lord Jesus Christ started a revolution in three and a half years through a life of prayer and dependence upon the Father and the Holy Spirit that is continuing on today in most of the world’s cultures and peoples. And He has invited us to join Him as we learn to pray like He prayed. He has invited us to bar His instruments to bring heaven’s life and glory down to this sin wracked earth.

But lest we think that now because we understand better what the Lord’s prayer or model prayer means – – that we will automatically begin to pray that way – – Jesus gives us some added tips or warnings ore reality checks to help us develop the kind of lifestyle that must be in place for this kind of prayer to kick in. INTRODUCTION – In the great hymn – “A Mighty Fortress” – Martin Luther – one of the men who stood against the unrighteous religious establishment of his day, and helped bring about the much needed Reformation, penned these words, “For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, And armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.”

Satan and his hordes of demons live to thwart the purposes of God on the earth by deceiving, causing, oppressing and intimidating the likes of us. They operate by supernatural power, though they are not all powerful as our God is. They have supernatural knowledge, though they are not all knowing as our God is. They have the ability to travel supernaturally, though they are not omnipresent as our God is. Continue reading But Deliver us from Evil – Matt. 6:13

INTRODUCTION – In our journey through the Lord’s prayer, we come to a request today that has stumped many. And if you are looking for a crystal clear explanation of this request, I’m not sure I can give it.

But dive in we must, because even if we can get 90% of its meaning and practice it,… our personal lives, our families and our community will be far better off as a result. One thing we know – – giving in to temptation eventually has a ripple effect far broader and wider than any of us considered when we decided to take the bait. INTRODUCTION – Review & General Overview of this section of Matthew
3 God centered prayers come first
Then 4 us centered prayers

Last week – Give us this day our daily bread – – Focus on God as our loving caring all – knowing Father who is absolutely committed to providing for His kids as they learn to cry out to Him and trust Him for that provision on a daily basis.

This morning, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
Or – “forgive us our sins, as we also have forgiven those who have sinned against us.” One version translates this “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Continue reading The Blessing of Forgiveness – Matthew 6:12

INTRODUCTION – For the last year or more we have been walking our way through this amazing book called the gospel of Matthew. When the infinitely wise Holy Spirit wrote this book through the pen and personality of Matthew – – – the tax collector turned disciple of Jesus – – He wove themes throughout these 28 chapters – – themes that give us needed insight into who He is, how He operates and what He expects of us. That expectation by the way is always based or predicated on what He has put in us through the miracle of regeneration or salvation or justification or conversion – – whatever you want to call it.

One of those themes that ties the various thoughts and teachings of this book together is that of righteousness. This theme first appears when we are told in chapter one that Joseph – Mary’s husband and Jesus’s non biological dad – was a righteous man. (1:19). That is – he was a man that in general – as a lifestyle – walked in rightness with God, and with all the people he dealt with – including his wife to be – Mary. INTRODUCTION – Why on a Foggy cool day, when we could be home watching basketball, or taking a nap, are we going to gather at the inlet beach in Morro Bay and baptize a couple of our members? What if we get seaweed in our hair? What if a crab bites our foot? What if someone who knows me from school or work drives by and sees me? Isn’t this kind of an outdated practice? Is getting baptized really that important?

INTRODUCTION – Big picture of Matthew?
“Nothing I can do about it.”
“It is what it is.”
“God is going to do what God is going to do.”
“I wish I knew what God’s will is.”

I. God has chosen to fulfill His will on the earth through the prayers of his People. God’s will being done on the earth is contingent upon the prayers of the people of God. It is not a given. Matt. 6:10 This is not a passive prayer of resignation. But an offensive aggressive prayer of submission and agreement with God’s purposes. It is our primary way to taste a little bit of heaven here on earth before we enter heaven to be forever with our Lord. But it will only be experienced by those who have come to a place where they truly only desire His will; and who realize how desperately our society needs God’s will to be made known and manifested. INTRODUCTION – We have been methodically working our way through the gospel of Matthew in our pursuit to be disciples of Jesus Christ, and to be used by Him to help others become disciples of Jesus Christ – – both objectives being crucial to pursue – if we are serious about truly being “wholly His”, and about bringing about tangible change in our society.

For the last few weeks – we have been exploring the depths of the so called Lord’s prayer or model prayer – – a prayer that resulted from an earnest request from Jesus’s disciples “Lord teach us to pray.” Luke records the request in chapter 11 of his gospel.

Matthew gives us the most detailed answer to the question in Matthew ch. 6. If you haven’t already turned there, now might be a good time – we will be focusing on vs. 10 Continue reading Thy Kingdom Come – Matt. 6:10
